Creative Arts
Leader of Learning Creative Arts and Languages – Ms Morag Aitchison
At St Mary’s Catholic College, we offer students an excellent range of subjects and courses within Creative Arts Learning area. In Creative Arts, students are encouraged to explore their ideas and interests and relate them to the world around them while developing skills and understanding within their preferred discipline. These subjects also allow students to develop a range of skills for the of 21st century including creative thinking, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.
Our classrooms encourage our students to challenge themselves. We invariably teach our students to take risks in their learning and develop the students’ resilience when faced with a new skill or idea that they find hard to master. Additionally, the units of work in Creative Arts provide opportunities for students to explore the ideas, cultures and traditions that are unfamiliar to them, developing a deeper understanding of what it means to be a citizen of this world we share. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “The greatness of humanity is not in being human, but in being humane.”
Beyond the classroom, students can engage in performances with choir, band, theatre, and instrumental groups performing at school functions as well as the annual DioSounds production and the school Music Showcases, Art Exhibitions and Drama events. These events are a highlight of the school year.
